Sweetheart Dinner Date Change
Here is an updated message sent by ASU concerning the Sweetheart
Dinner.
"Hey Dave Happy Easter. Hope your weekend went well. This Sunday
at chapter we realized we had a conflict in scheduling at the house, and
we’re going to have to move the sweetheart dinner back exactly one week.
The new date is Monday, April 30th. I would appreciate if you could send
this out for me as soon as possible. Again thank you for all your help.
Also, let them know they can call or e-mail myself (Jpc23SigX@aol.com) or
Mike Schoefield to RSVP.
Thanks again, Justin Christman"
For those that did not see the original notice (those recently added
to the list) here is a copy of that note.
"Dave, This is Justin again. I wanted to let you and the rest of
our alumni know that we are planning a formal dinner here at the house on
Mon. April 23. This dinner will represent a few new things for our
house.
First, we will celebrate the passing of our sweetheart
and the installments of our new officers. Secondly, we will be kicking
off the much anticipated beginning of our Derby Days, which will begin
later that week.
The tentative times as of now are Cocktails 6-7pm,
followed by dinner at 7-8pm, Then we will have a few speakers say a few
words directly following the completion of dinner. The active brothers
will be dressed in shirt and tie.
All alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend. This
will give them the opportunity to establish relations with the newly
elected officers, and say good-bye to officers who are departing their
office. I believe this would be an instrumental step in improving our
current relations with our fellow alumni brothers. RSVP is greatly
appreciated as to get a ballpark figure on the number of meals needed to
be prepared.
Dave, I would be very grateful if you pass this along
to all alumni you are in contact with including Bill Scott. Any questions
or comments please do not hesitate to contact myself @ (480) 225-6497, or
Mike Schofield @ (480) 650-8966."

Birthday Bash Set for “Brother” Bert’s 90th
There’s a reason to celebrate at the April meeting of the Phoenix
Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter – the 90th birthday of Brother Bert Snyder (Mu ’33).
Don’t tell Bert, but the chapter’s planning a surprise party on the
evening of Wednesday, April 11 that you won’t want to miss.
We’ve enlisted everyone from the president of his alma mater, Denison
University, to the Grand Consul at national to make this a special event.
Don’t tell Bert, but his fraternity “little brother” — Dick Harman
(Mu ’35) – is flying in from Cleveland to toast Bert.
Joining Dick will be his son, Steve (Mu ’62), who promises to go into
his chapter’s archives and share excerpts from the Mu Chapter Daily
Journal from the early ’30s. He’s also getting letters of
congratulation from other Mu members from the early ’30s as well as
plans to present Bert with a numbered print of Mu Chapter.
To accommodate an expected large turnout, we’re foregoing a formal
dinner in favor of a buffet of tantalizing appetizers to allow
maximum time for socializing and for honoring the Phoenix Alumni
Chapter’s oldest member, Dr. Bert Snyder.
Bert’s wife will be there. His kids are trying to make it, too.
Please, though, don’t tell Bert! Just be there!

SKY HARBOR STATUS UPDATE PLANNED FOR SIGS’ MEETING
It’s a place we probably visit several times a year, but usually all
we see is limited to the sights between the curbside check-in or
parking garage to the concourse gate — with, perhaps, a quick stop
for a shoeshine or coffee.
In March, the Phoenix Alumni Chapter of Sigma Chi will learn about
Sky Harbor International Airport — from its history to the progress
of ongoing construction projects — from the person most publicly
associated with the airport.
Airport spokesperson Suzanne Luber, who is often seen on local TV
newscasts as well as on The Phoenix Channel 10 hosting
airport-related programming, will the dinner speaker on Wednesday,
March 14, at Phoenix City Grill.
Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 and the speaker
at 7. Phoenix City Grill is located on the SW corner of 16th Street
and Bethany Home Road.
————————————
Upcoming meetings:
April 11: Play ball! We’ll be talking Arizona Diamondbacks baseball
with Joel Horn, editor of Diamondbacks magazine, at Phoenix City Grill.
May 10: Ritual meeting. (the last one in December was awesome!)

ASU (Local Active Chapter) Update
The guys are continuing to make strides and it looks like they may be
in line for yet another repeat as the Best Chapter on Campus. The
House GPA is reported to be a 3.0, which exceeds the All Men’s
Average. The list of majors for the Actives has been completed and
we will be moving forward with the implementation of the Alumni
Mentor program so be watching for more info over the next two months
so that we can plan on hitting the ground running with this program
for the fall semester.

Other Alumni Chapter Events
Dan is working on the planning for this years Founders Day Golf
Tourney. If you would like to help with this project contact Dan
Clements at 480-610-4848
Also rumors are that Bud may be trying to setup a repeat of a set of
suites for a Coyotes game!

the event please call Dan Clements @ 480-610-4848.

There was a very disturbing column last week that attacked the
fraternity system and accused it of essentially being the cause for
binge drinking on campus. I responded to the author to point out his
errors on this topic. If you would like to read the original column
and my reply (which will probably be published in the next Greek
Review newspaper) go to:
http://www.microworks.net/dave/college.html
FYI, the student he talks about that died was not a Greek and the
house he was at had lost its charter about two weeks before this
incident occurred.

* PLEASE NOTE: Meeting is Tuesday this month as Valentine’s Day falls
on Wednesday.

The Spirit of Sigma Chi
The Spirit of Sigma Chi, as conceived by the Founders more than 140
years ago yet visible and alive today, is based on the theory that…
….Friendship among members, sharing a common belief in an ideal,…
….and possessing different temperaments, talents, and convictions,…
….is superior to friendship among members having the same
temperaments, talents, and convictions, and that…
….Genuine friendship can be maintained without surrendering the
principle of individuality or sacrificing one’s personal judgement.

for you to sign up for the Mentor program at ASU.
Mentor Program Annoucement
Greetings Brothers,
As the Chapter Advisor to the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi at
Arizona State University I am putting together a Mentor program for
the Active Brothers and need to find Alumni Brothers in the area
interested in participating in this program.
I am trying to keep the time commitment to a minimum so that both our
busy work schedules and precious free time are not severely taxed.
I plan on the program starting off with an introduction dinner for
the alumni and active brothers to be held at the ASU house at the
beginning of the semester/school year and concluding with a weekend
BBQ at the end of the school year to cap off this program. During
the school year I would like for the Alumni Brother and the Active
Brother to schedule times of their own choosing to get together for a
few meetings as they see fit. These meetings could be
evenings/weekends or better yet held at your place of employment (if
possible) to expose the guys to your professional work environment.
The main emphasis for the Mentor program will be to provide an
experienced resource for the Active Brothers to use in obtaining
advice on the direction they need to ensure that their college
experience leads to a successful kickoff to their professional career.
We have, in addition to the numerous brothers in the Business School
and other colleges, Brothers in the Cronkite Journalism School and
the Architecture School. Please email (dave@microworks.net), fax
(480-649-9231) or call me (480-610-8234) if you are interested in
participating in this new program.
—————————————–
On a personal, although related, note I have been approached about
selling my company, but before I make any decisions on this I would
need to explore options for employment. If you would be interested
in reviewing my resume or know of someone who might please contact me.
In hoc,

and provide us tips on what’s right to serve at the holidays.
Our new gathering spot — Phoenix City Grill — is conveniently located
off the Squaw Peak Parkway (SR 51) at Bethany Home Road. It’s situated on the
SW corner of 16th Street and Bethany Home, facing 16th Street (and just south

choice of entrees: Stuffed chicken breast or meat loaf are the options in
November. As always, there will be a cash bar.
